Support for Academics and Beyond

The Scholarship and Welfare Fund of the Alumni Association of Hunter College (S&W Fund) is committed to helping Hunter College students complete their educations by offering a variety of scholarships and grants to address expenses both in and out of the classroom.

The scholarship I received through the S&W Fund transformed my college experience. It provided me with an incredible place to live in New York City and helped me connect with new people and unique opportunities, all with the freedom to enjoy college without a financial burden. I couldn’t be more grateful for this organization!

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Empowering Achievement

Undergraduate tuition scholarships are awarded to well-qualified students eligible for financial aid. The S&W Fund awards a total of $450,000 annually in undergraduate scholarships, with a maximum of $2,000 per student. Once students qualify for this award, they remain recipients until graduation provided they are enrolled full time with 12 or more credits and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Scholarships awarded through the S&W Scholars Program cover full tuition for four years. Students receiving this scholarship must be enrolled full time with at least 12 credits per semester and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 their first year, 3.2 their second year, and 3.5 for their third and fourth years.
Dormitory Scholar Grants provide housing in the 92nd Street or 97th Street dormitories to S&W Scholars in need of housing assistance.
The Thomas Hunter Honors Program supports outstanding students pursuing interdisciplinary undergraduate studies. Each year, seven students in this program are awarded $5,000 each. Through a pilot program, we also provide ten students in this program who are applying to graduate school with a $500 grant to cover application costs.
The S&W Fund awards $20,000 annually to the Office of AccessAbility for assistance to students with various learning challenges. Funds may be used for readers, signers, and large-type computer screens, as well as guidance for students with special problems, among other things.
The Public Service Scholars Program is a one-year internship and academic program that prepares talented undergraduates for careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. The S&W Fund supports stipends for students in this program, as they are required to serve 20 hours per week in a public service placement, in addition to their coursework.
The S&W Fund awards $20,000 annually to the music department. Funds are used to finance private lessons for music majors who would not be able to reach the level of proficiency they need without such lessons.
The S&W Fund Food Insecurity Program provided $20,000 to fund Hunter’s Food Pantry Program - The Purple Apron in its first year in 2018. After demonstrated success, S&W will continue to support Hunter’s Food Pantry to aid students who are Food Insecure.
